My knowledge of New Japan in the 90's isn't as good because I was always more of a Kobashi/Kawada/Misawa guy, so I'll start this thread off with the 15 minute war between Ishii & Shibata from the 2013 G-1 climax. One of my favourite matches of the last 5 years

NJPW - 31.01.1990 - Jushin Liger vs. Naoki Sano:
Here's a damn fine match. The Observer MOTY in 1990 and one of my favorite matches from Japan. Liger just refuses to die.

Good work. I'll check that out later.

I followed through the WON for years, but did more reading than actual viewing of the matches. DailyMotion and Ustream changed the game though.
The first match turned me from "Follow Along with the Meltz" into "Avoiding Spoilers at All Costs". You could really feel the ushering in of a new generation. As a fan it was either "keep up" or "catch up later". Glad I dove in head first.
The second match turned me from "Avoiding Spoilers" into "Ordering Every PPV so I can Watch Them Live". This match just sits in my DVD player so I can have amazing background noise when I feel the need. Killer match, but very much slept on after an amazing 2013 campaign.

This thread is great for me as I haven't caught much NJPW. Any good matches involving wrestlers I would know?

This thread is great for me as I haven't caught much NJPW. Any good matches involving wrestlers I would know? Try a couple of Kurt Angle matches. Vs. Yuji Nagata from the TNA vs NJPW global impact show. (Note: Angle wasn't the IWGP champ at his point. That was Inoki's weird third belt stemming from the Brock Lesnar falling out.) And then his match with Shinsuke Nakamura to unify the weird belt with the real IWGP Championship

A lot of people think that Kensuke Sasaki's best match was against Kobashi in 2005, and they're probably right, but this one isn't far off. It was a really big deal at the time because it was the first time an active All Japan wrestler had competed in NJPW. That was still a big deal back then, as evidenced by Kawada getting pelted with garbage by the reserved Japanese fans on his way to the ring.
Kensuske Sasaki vs. Toshiaki Kawada, October 2000
Again, the video runs 30 minutes, but that includes the pre-match video package, the intros and the post match antics. The actual match only runs about 20. I point this out because a lot of people seem to worry that all puro matches are impenetrable hour long epics. This is just a brutal, bad-tempered war.
EDIT: Forgot to mention Sasaki's sweet mullet, which is almost worth * on it's own.

We talked about this one day on the blog, but I think WWE has trained us very well to expect main event matches to last around 25 minutes. As a result, longer matches seem intimidating, for the lack of a better word. Once you watch a match, though, the length isn't that important, as long as the match is good. Triple H/Rock Iron Man flies by for me, for example.

Got a chance to watch that Anderson/Tanahashi match. I was blown away by the last 5-10 minutes and I have figured something out: Ziggler's Zig Zag pales in comparison to the Tanahashi Sling Blade. That move is TREMENDOUS.

The fact that The Great Muta hasn't even been mentioned proves this thread is bullshit and you're all dumb.

I posted a match or two in each of these threads as a starting point. If you want to see more Muta matches then post them. I'm on my phone so it's a bit too much hassle to post them right now but I really like his match with Hogan from 93 and his match with Nobuhiko Takada to blow off the uwfi invasion angle.

I've always wondered how Yuji Nagata became a huge star in Japan. I know WCW didn't book him very well, but he looked iffy on Nitro for those years. Did he improve greatly back home or was he just working the wrong style in WCW?

Yuji was so god damn boring in WCW. But I wonder if a re-watch would reveal he was ahead of his time?
